Tallangatta Weekend, 25-27 January.
We had 10 starters for the weekend, 6 leaving from Lilydale and 4 more coming in at Yea. The plan was morning tea at Mansfield,
lunch at Milawa,
fuel top-up at Myrtleford then on to Tallangatta arriving about 4.30pm. The plan worked with the only incidents being some police profiling, by stopping only us bikes for breath tests and waving the cars through, and us getting monstered by a group of sports bikes after Whitfield. We really are a very well behaved group compared to some out there.
Most of us stayed at the Victoria Hotel, which now has a new owner, Cheryl. She has painted and scrubbed the old pub and provides a very friendly atmosphere, including good meals. Tariff at $35 per single including simple breakfast was excellent value. We were made most welcome.
Tallangatta is a great place to base rides from. You can go in all directions for fun loops unless you want straight roads. John C departed Saturday evening for socialising in Wodonga.
Sunday had Ray T and Gary C doing their thing. Seven of us left on the mountain loop, Thredbo, Jindabyne, Kiandra, Cabramurra and back to Tallangatta. This is some of the best road and views in Australia. I have done this run many times and am always impressed. Alf, Jack, Mick, Mat, Max and Sam agreed. Smiles all round. Lunch and re-fuel was at Jindabyne. We even had free Anzac biscuits, tea and coffee at Cabramurra for Australia Day compliments. The pace was leisurely with plenty of breaks and photo stops letting us get back near 6.00pm. A cool shower, followed by cold drinks then tea while watching the tennis finished the day.
Monday had us spitting into 3 groups for the ride home. Alf, Jack and I wanted to do the road just out of Tallangatta back to Omeo. This is 162 km with less than 7 km of dirt, soon to be all paved. What a great run it proved to be, following the river with many changes in elevation. It takes you through Eskdale and Mitta Mitta. 3 hours later we arrived in Omeo worn out from so many corners, some less than 30 metres apart. Lunch was at Bairnsdale and the heat had really arrived by then. A safe and correct trip along the Princes Hwy was the fastest way home getting us there by 4.00pm.
Thanks to those who came. It made the weekend. To those who didn’t – you really missed out. A possible long weekend would be a Tallangatta or Omeo based ride doing the triangle between Omeo, Corryong and Tallangatta. Choose your own direction. That triangle is a day ride in itself. I can get excited just thinking about it.
