President’s Report April 2013
Members of the new committee are Holly Fields (Secretary), Samuel Sun (Treasurer), Greg Rees (Quartermaster), Doug Shearer (Ride Coordinator) plus Raymond Herd and John Jacobs as general committee members. I remain in the role of president. Kate Clarke and Alf Dennemoser continue in their respective ex-officio roles as website administrator and Spare Tyre Editor.
With regard to the website, it is impossible to keep everything immediately obvious on the front page. A click on the “Latest Content” header will take you to the most recent activities and forum posts and is a good way to see the most recent activity.
The website and Spare Tyre are great communication avenues thanks to Kate and Alf and can only be as useful as the input provided by members. It has been great to se some newer members doing ride reports and adding photos to the website.
Recent Activity & Upcoming Events
We have had some great riding weather over the past few months and a great variety of rides thanks to the efforts of ride leaders and the participants who made guests feel welcome. This has led to quite a few guests joining the Ulysses Club after sampling what we have to offer. Thank you all.
Many people (including Ulysses members from Melbourne, Mornington Wanderers, Two Bays, Shearwaters, South Gippsland and Yarra Ranges), volunteered and assisted with the running of the Asia Pacific Ironman event on 24 March and as a result the organisers will be making significant donations to both the UCARF and the Very Special Kids organisation. It was a challenging, fatiguing and yet very enjoyable day. Thank you to all who assisted. On the same day we also managed to have a significant attendance of branch members at the Mt Franklin Meet and Greet hosted by the Geelong Branch. It is great to se such a variety of participation.
As I write this, I am preparing to head off the AGM in Maryborough and am looking forward to experiencing the event and seeing many of you up there. For those who can’t make it the ride calendar has been kept full so there are still activities for all.
The Autumn Ice Run to Howmans Gap (Near Falls Creek) is on again from 18 – 19 May. If you intend to come please let me know as soon as practicable as we do need to know numbers in advance for catering.
Melbourne Branch Odyssey - Nagambie Friday 18 to Sunday 20 October 2013
As detailed at the Branch AGM, the annual Melbourne Branch get together this year will again be held at Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park. The event and booking arrangements are detailed on the web page. We hope to provide very good news regarding the live entertainer soon.
Rides and participation
I contend that one of the primary strengths of the Melbourne branch is that we hold regular and very interesting rides which are open to all Ulysses members irrespective of branch affiliation. We can only continue to provide this interesting variety of rides if members who regularly participate in rides, actually volunteer to lead a ride from time to time. Doug is now actively looking for volunteers to lead some rides over the winter months, particularly July through to September. Some cold and wet days do occur June through September, but we also get some beautiful sunny days which can actually be perfect for riding. As these cannot be predicted months in advance, we try to schedule a ride every week and accept that on occasions, if we get really bad weather, very few participants will attend and that would not be a reflection on the ride leader. So come on! If you haven’t led a ride recently get in touch with Doug or me so that we can fill the calendar up to September before the June Spare Tyre come out.
Finally, I would like to say, “When riding, practise road craft, courtesy and consideration for others so that we can continue to enjoy our motorcycling safely.”
