President’s Report December 2013

First, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, plus an enjoyable, healthy, prosperous and safe new year.  Try to take some time to do the things you actually enjoy in life.

Recent Events

The last few months have been very busy.   The Odyssey was again a success with well over 60 people attending who were very happy to see Dennis Tucker back as the entertainer.   VSK went very well thanks to the efforts of Holly, the 3 Wheelers Group and all who helped plus the generosity of Bunnings in Coburg who provided prizes which were won by the families of Very Special Kids.   The Christmas function was attended by well over 50 people who thoroughly enjoyed the live entertainment put on by Gary Porthouse and the great value meal put on by Nicole at the Donvale Sports Club.  The following day Barbara Maggs and Tony Jenner were again instrumental in organising the Annual Toy Run and our thanks go out to them.     We wound the riding year up having the president’s BBQ ride to Upper Yarra Dam and thanks go out to Greg, Anita and Ron who overcame significant logistical hiccups (the food disappeared at one stage!) to provide us with a BBQ lunch.

Upcoming Events

There is also a good variety of events coming up as detailed on the ride calendar and website and I hope to see you at some of them.  These include overnight rides in January, February, March and May.

Melbourne Branch turns 30 in 2014 and we have a number of events organised to commemorate this great fact including a pub night on 25 April and a ride to Korumburra in May.

I am also looking a getting another Rider Training Day organised in the near future and already have 4 expressions of interest.  An ideal size group would be 8 people.

The branch Annual General Meeting will be held on 23 February 2014 at Donvale Sports Ground.   Nominations for contested committee positions must be received by 23 January 2014.   Nomination forms are available via the web site, The Spare Tyre or me.   Nominations have been received for all formal positions, except that of secretary.   Greg Rees has accepted nomination as president for 2014 and Holly would like to step down from the secretary’s position.    It is still open for members to stand for any position and we would really like to see a number of members nominate to join the committee and take on the task of running branch related social events and bring in some fresh views.  If you think you have some skills that can help the continuity of this great branch and club please do step up and get involved.

Alf is stepping down as the editor of the Spare Tyre, so if you think this is your forte please contact a member of the committee.

The branch can only continue to provide for the enjoyment of members by having an active and constantly evolving committee.

Our sponsors greatly assist the finances of the branch and I do encourage you to support them when it comes to bikes, servicing, accessories and clothing.

Our newest sponsors are a1 Motorcycles (see story on front page of website) who were heavily involved in helping our members Andrew, Jack and Sam get their recently imported Chinese CJ 750 outfits ready for the road and BM Motorcycles of Ringwood who specialise in servicing BMW motorcycles and have been doing so for many years to the great satisfaction of some of our very long standing members.  Our sponsors, including regulars Andy Strapz and Bike Mart provide the support which has enabled us to fund events such as VSK Day and fund website & Spare Tyre costs.

I remind everyone that safety is the responsibility of each and every individual who participates in rides and events and unsafe practices will not be tolerated.  Exercise courtesy and consideration to all road users to make sure we all get home safely with ourselves, our licences and bikes intact and enjoy our participation to the maximum.

Finally, I will say, “When riding, practise road craft, courtesy and consideration for others so that we can continue to enjoy our motorcycling safely.”

John Cook

An Introduction to our Sponsors

a1 Motorcycles based in Brighton and Ringwood are authorised dealers for a variety of European exotica, scooters, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki plus others.   They also provide accessories, service and spares plus used bikes.

Andy Strapz based in Frankston make their “branded” gear in Melbourne and all their stock has been specifically selected and tested for travelling motorcyclists.  The range of gear is wide.  Is there anything you want for Christmas before that trip?

Bike Mart in Ringwood is well known to most of you and has been supporting us for many years.  Brian has a great range of accessories, spares and apparel.  Do you need to give any hints for the festive season?

BM Motorcycles in Ringwood provide much more than the BMW log book servicing to which many branch members will attest.   They have a wide variety of spares, are approved insurance repairers and do all sorts of mechanical repairs on BMW.
